High Mark Plumbing is always ready to help with your sewer main cleaning in Marpole Vancouver BC. This week, we would like to draw your attention to a public education program designed to help stop the formation of “fatbergs.”
Fatbergs are lumps of hardened cooking fat mixed with all those other things that are less than flushable. A huge fatberg formed in the sewers under London’s East End, and has now been dubbed the “Whitechapel Fatberg.” The BBC had some fun with it, planting a small flag in the mass, but the reality is not so funny. It weighs more than 140 tons, and is as big as eleven double-decker city buses. We would love to say that Vancouver doesn’t have this problem, but the reality is that any place with sewer mains is subject to fat buildup in disposal lines. On October 11, 2016, CBC aired a news story showing a large sewer main that is almost completely clogged with fat and other debris. Metro Vancouver spends $2 million or more each year cleaning up damage caused by hardened cooking grease. The slogan for the Vancouver public education program is “Wipe it, and bin it.” Instead of pouring liquid grease down your sink or into your toilet, pour it into a container – a tin can will do nicely – then wipe the pan with a paper towel before washing it in the sink. Some recycling centers will accept small amounts of grease along with other household debris. Commercial food preparation companies will need to make other arrangements. The good news on that front is that this costly waste product is easily converted into fuel, creating savings instead of expense.
