At High Mark Plumbing, we like to stay up-to-date on plumbing and plumbing technology. That process includes knowing what is new in hot water heaters in Calgary. Heat pumps connect to and used for the power source for hot water heaters is one of the pieces of recent technology.
According to the U.S. Energy Department’s description of heat pumps and water heaters heat pumps (which need a fuel source, such as electricity) can heat water by pulling heat from the air around the water heater or from the earth and directing it into the water heater. This can be a stand-alone process, or your heat pump can also work with your air conditioning by pulling heat out of the inside air in your home and using it to heat water during the summer, or by pulling heat from the outside air or from the earth (geothermal). Such systems can also be integrated with radiant heating systems to help heat the home during the winter. They will not work for all homes – there must be a specified amount of space around the water heater and heat pump for it to pull heat from the air, and there are also some engineering constrains that go with geothermal. Some large size water heaters are required to have a heat pump as part of their system.
