High Mark Plumbing is ready to be your plumbers in Okotoks, Calgary AB. But what, exactly, does that mean to be a plumber? It is a curious word, which at first glance, doesn’t seem to have much to do with water, pipes, gas and drain lines – to name just a few of the associated items that go with the trade.
The word “Plumber” comes from the Latin word, plumbum, which means lead. Lead is a malleable substance and was the easiest metal the Romans had on hand to make into pipes. This also explains the term “plumb bob” which is a lump of lead on a string, used to help ensure that house walls stand up straight. There has been some speculation that lead from those early plumbing pipes might have leached into the water the Romans drank and bathed in, causing arsenic poisoning. More recent accounts about ancient plumbing, however, have pointed out that Rome has a mineral rich water, and that it is likely the pipes quickly calcified on the inside. This would have helped reduce the contamination from the pipes. Other types of piping have been used to deliver water from springs, rivers or lakes into houses. Wood, bamboo, reeds, and even clay have bee used to bring water into homes. Modern pipes include cast iron, galvanized steel, copper, PVC plastic and Pex – just to name a few. While there are many other skills required of modern plumbers, knowing about these pipes, how and where each type should be used, is essential.
