High Mark Plumbing reminds everyone to protect your hot water heater in Calgary. Winter is on its way, and with it comes freezing temperatures with potential for damage to your plumbing. Water heaters are not exempt.
If the heat in your home should fail for a brief time, the heat of the water in your water heater can help protect it. But should temperatures plummet below freezing and your heating system fail at the same time, your plumbing system including the water heater are at risk. If the power is off for most of your neighborhood, or across a broad area, the problems increase exponentially because utilities, such as the main pumps for water, and even pumps at your local gas station might cease to work. Draining as much water as possible out of your pipes and your water heater will help relieve your plumbing. Water expands as it freezes. PVC and metal pipes tend to burst with the added pressure. Water heater liners can also be affected. When draining your pipes and water heater, catch as much water as possible in containers. These can be two-liter soft drink bottles, hot-water bottles, or gallon jugs used to hold milk or water. Place the hot water in its own ice chest or box and cover them with blankets to help preserve the heat. Tent blankets over the box and cuddle up near it to use the heat.
